In Dick Hoyt’s world the only difference between a hill and mountain is something called attitude. Along with their courage and determination, the Hoyt family has conquered many mountains in the past forty years, literally and figuratively. They were devastated when their first son was born with cerebral palsy, a non-vocal quadriplegic, but the accepted the challenge. Rather than put Rick in and institution and forget him – as was suggested by the doctors – they gave him a life unlike any other. Picture a father-and-son team who together compete in marathons and triathlons. Although in a wheelchair, Rick along with his dad have competed in the Boston Marathon 26 times, and in Ironman Triathlons six times. Team Hoyt was inducted to the Ironman Hall of Fame in 2008. They have appeared on HBO’s “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel”, where their segment recently won a Sports Emmy Award for Best Long Feature. Measure the sacrifice and the determination it takes to participate in more than 135 triathlons, to run in over 50 marathons and 50 half-marathons and numerous road races at lesser distances. They also travel the world speaking out about people with disabilities and promoting the Team Hoyt motto, “Yes You Can”. Rick turned 50 in 2012 and Dick turned 72. As they speak and travel more, they are racing less. At the beginning of their career, they participated in 50 races per year but now aim for 20-25 races per year.
