As one of the best players the sport has ever known, Mark Messier impressed fans and fellow players alike during a 25 year long career. Nicknamed “The Moose” for his strength, he began his professional hockey career in the World Hockey Association (WHA) and in 1979 was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2nd round, 48th overall. By his third year in the NHL, Messier was a bonafide star, scoring over 100 points and combining with other Oiler greats to create a winning dynasty. He was the playoff MVP when the Edmonton Oilers won the Stanley Cup in 1985, one of six cup victories for Messier in his distinguished career. In 1991, Mark Messier’s appearances began for the New York Rangers, where he remained through 1997 and led the team to their first Stanley Cup victory in more than half a century. With six Stanley Cups under his belt, Mark Messier holds the distinction of being the only hockey player to lead two different teams to Stanley Cup championships as their captain. In 2007, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, in his first year of eligibility. He is the current special assistant to the president and general manager of the New York Rangers.
