Mark A.R. Kleiman is a nationally recognized expert on crime and drug policy. His role as the consulting “pot czar” for the State of Washington is featured in a recent New Yorker profile and in a Daily Beast interview. He is Professor of Public Policy at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs, a member of the Committee on Law and Justice of the United States National Research Council, and editor of the Journal of Drug Policy Analysis. Professor Kleiman’s research focuses on developing methods for having both less crime and less punishment by substituting swift and certain sanctions for randomized severity. Professor Kleiman attended Haverford College, graduating magna cum laude with a B.A. Economics (honors), Philosophy (honors), and Political Science (high honors). For his graduate education, Kleiman attended John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, earning a Master of Public Policy degree in 1974 and a Ph.D. in Public Policy in 1983. He has previously taught at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, served as a Visiting Professor at the University of Virginia Batten School and at Harvard Law School, and as the first Thomas C. Schelling Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Maryland. Dr. Kleiman is also an adjunct scholar at the Center for American Progress. He is the founder of a widely-read group blog, The Reality-Based Community (www.samefacts.com). Before returning to academic life, Prof. Kleiman worked as a legislative assistant on Capitol Hill, for Dr. Edwin Land at Polaroid Corporation, at Boston City Hall, and as Director of the Office of Policy and Management Analysis for the Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.
