Bolton originally performed in the hard rock and heavy metal genres from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, both on his early solo albums and those he recorded as the frontman of the band Blackjack. He is best known, however, for his series of soft rock ballads. His hits include “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You,” “How Can We Be Lovers,” “When I’m Back on My Feet Again” and “Time, Love and Tenderness.” 

His cover of Percy Sledge’s “When a Man Loves a Woman,” also topped the charts and earned him a Grammy.
