Alex Honnold
Alex Honnold is widely recognized as the most accomplished and daring rock climber of his generation. He first gained global recognition for his free solo ascent of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, captured in the Academy Award®-winning documentary Free Solo.
More recently, Honnold expanded the boundaries of what’s possible with Skyscraper Live, a groundbreaking live broadcast in which he free soloed one of the tallest buildings in the world, bringing millions along in real time. The project redefined how audiences experience risk, focus, and human performance.
Beyond climbing, Honnold is known for his humility and his commitment to environmental impact through the Honnold Foundation, which supports solar energy access around the world. Whether on a remote big wall or a global stage, he continues to push the limits of human potential while using his platform to drive meaningful change.
Alex Honnold is the only person to free solo Yosemite’s 3,000-foot El Capitan, climbing alone without a rope. More people have walked on the moon than will ever replicate what he achieved. His rare combination of physical ability and mental discipline has made him one of the most iconic athletes of his generation.
His 2017 ascent of El Capitan, documented in the Academy Award®-winning film Free Solo, brought climbing into the global spotlight and established Honnold as a defining figure in human performance.
He has continued to build on that legacy with cutting-edge ascents and expeditions around the world, from speed records on El Capitan’s Nose to the famed “Triple Solo” of Mt. Watkins, Half Dome, and El Capitan in under 24 hours, as well as exploratory climbs across Antarctica, South America, and Greenland.
In 2026, Honnold once again pushed into new territory with Skyscraper Live, a first-of-its-kind live broadcast in which he free soloed a massive urban skyscraper. The project marked a shift from documenting feats after the fact to experiencing them in real time, bringing millions into the moment and redefining the intersection of sport, media, and storytelling.
Despite his global recognition, Honnold remains grounded and purpose-driven. In 2012, he founded the Honnold Foundation, an environmental nonprofit focused on expanding access to solar energy worldwide. The foundation has supported projects in more than 100 communities across 30 countries, improving lives while reducing environmental impact.
He is also the host of the Climbing Gold Podcast, where he explores the stories and culture that define the sport, and continues to collaborate on documentary and television projects that combine exploration with environmental storytelling.
Honnold lives in Las Vegas with his wife Sanni and their daughters, June and Alice.
