Naber’s gold medal winning race in the 200 meter backstroke came in at a time of 1 minute and 59.19 seconds, which set a world record that stood for the next seven years. His 100 meter backstroke time of 55.49 seconds also stood for seven years. He received the James E. Sullivan Award for top American amateur athlete of the year in 1997 for his accomplishments, and carried the Olympic flag into the Opening Ceremonies in Los Angeles.
